Review: Dr Tan Ying Chien from Sloane Clinic 2023

Dr Tan Ying Chien
MBBS (S’pore), MRCS (Edin), MMed (Surg), FAMS (Plastic Surgery)
Son to a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Tan has always been spurred by his father to be a surgeon. Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1996. He then became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was later awarded his Master of Medicine in Surgery from NUS.

Dr Tan then began his Plastic Surgery Specialist Training programme at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Towards the end of his training at the department, he received a Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship to train at the world-renowned Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. During his yearlong pupilage there, Dr Tan refined his skills in cleft, jaw and aesthetic surgery. He also honed his passion in ear reconstruction for congenital ear defects, which has been viewed by many to be more of a form of artistry than surgery.

Of both Taiwanese and Japanese descent, Dr Tan’s Japanese roots also led him under the tutelage of the illustrious Dr Satoru Nagata at Nagata Microtia and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Hospital in Japan, where Dr Tan perfected his technique in ear reconstruction surgery. Upon his return to Singapore, Dr Tan joined the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and started building up his practice in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Today, Dr Tan is the Consultant Plastic Surgeon at SW1 Clinic Plastic Surgery Centre. He remains a Visiting Consultant to the Plastic Surgery Departments at both KK and SGH, providing pro bono ear reconstructive surgery for needy patients. He continues to serve as one of the only two surgeons in Singapore providing ear reconstruction surgical care.

Dr Tan is part of Operation Smile, a charitable organization that organizes medical missions to third world countries to help children suffering from cleft lip and palate deformities. It is Dr Tan’s meticulous nature as well as his liking and respect for everything aesthetically pleasing that led him into the field of Plastic Surgery. His hobby reflects his nature: he loves to assemble plastic models during his free time, which led to his current toy museum of over 300 hand-assembled model (Diecast) cars, Japanese (Gundam) robots and Star Wars collection.

Dr Tan Ying Chien Review

39 years old, 160cm and 49 kg, with 335 ccc Motiva Ergonomix2.

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Tan, who is very experienced, high integrity, and a very safe pair of hands. After having 2 kids and breastfeeding, I finally decided to do something about my chest after 'thinking' about it for a few years. After a lot of research and consultations with 3 of the top plastic surgeons for BA in Singapore, I decided to go with Dr Tan. He very patiently explained what to expect and allayed all my fears/concerns with factual information based on his experience (instead of trying to sell, which I had an issue with other doctors). I also trusted him on what size would work well for my frame as I was looking for something enhanced but also natural looking and feeling.

The staff are very caring, very responsive. The clinic itself where I had the operation is also beautiful and very comfortable.

The surgery itself and recovery was much easier than I had expected. I probably experienced only 2-3 days of being uncomfortable (though not really painful). The results have been nothing short of amazing. The size, texture, and feeling are all even better than I had originally anticipated. I am currently 2 months after the surgery and so happy I made this decision.

During our initial consult, he appeared really friendly and I felt like he could understand my needs. I asked him questions and he gave me answers . He says he does this almost everyday but he will not 'anyhow do' . He makes every BA his own work of art. And I could really see that in my BA. He only recommends what's most suitable for you, will not over do it. Dr Tan recommended me to do Subglandular as I has 'meat' so it could cover the implant.

Forward to the day of surgery, the nurse got me to change to the gown, ate some antioxidant pills, dr Tan came in to draw the needful lines on my chest. He assured that the anesthetist was his school friend , and to feel trusted with his skills. Was asked a few medical questions by the anesthetist and whisked into the OT. Really cold but was covered with a heated blanket. Cannula was inserted into my dorsal vein for anesthesia and next thing I knew I was knocked out.

I woke up hearing the nurse calling my name n saying it was all done but drifted off to sleep again. I woke up again in recovery room, and asked for water. I was wearing the compression bra. I kept using my hands to sit up. I guess doing it subglandularly, I didn't feel like my chest muscles were sore. Just a feeling of 2 plastic things inside my chest. Nurse mentioned it took 1.5h and asked me to rest.

Dr Tan came in after a while to look at my condition and we had unboxing of the new boobs. He mentioned they looked really natural and my husband also agreed. Took a photo to show me what he did for right nipple which was facing downwards originally and now it was facing out like the left side. You can really see the handiwork and meticulousness he has when he does these surgeries. Once I could stand up , they allowed me to go home.

Recovery wise, I didn't feel much except for soreness heaviness . I was able to lift my arms, wash hair, even cleaned up my floor when my daughter puked . Overall, I'm very happy with my experience with SW1 and Dr Tan. Will update again on progress pics. Here is my pic at day 4, it looks one side bigger as I was using my right hand to take a selfie.

Hi mummies, I would like to share my experience with Dr Tan Ying Chien from SW1 Clinic. Actually this review is way overdue as I did fat transfer from abdomen and waist to breast and lipo for armpit fats in Feb this year. I also did removal of eye bags in Feb. I’m in my 30s, mother of 2. Both I did c sec and I bf my older one til 2yo. I have a very flabby tummy, a big muffin top above my c sec scar and saggy breast after breastfeeding. C drop to B. Dr Tan said that I am the perfect candidate for fat transfer as it solves 2 problems at once. It is also more cost effective and alot less down time compared to a tummy tuck. I paid about all in 18k for the fat transfer and lipo for armpits. Very reasonable and value for money. But that’s not the best part. Dr Tan is really the best doctor I have ever met. He is reassuring, chatty, funny, understanding, honest, consistent, professional, takes pride in his work and a perfectionist. When you speak to him, instantly he is relatable, relevant and you form a connection with him. If you are still searching for a surgeon, do shortlist Dr Tan, meet him once and you will know what I mean.

I’m happy and satisfied with the results right now after 6 months from the fat transfer surgery. My husband is also happy with the drastic results. All my friends and colleagues have mentioned that I lost weight and looked sharper. The surgery was painless, you sleep and wake up to a new and improved you. The best version of yourself, in SW1 words. Recovery was very manageable as there was no sharp pain, just feels very achy everywhere like you did intensive workout non stop for 10hrs the day before. By a week, everything feels almost back to normal. My boobs are now D and feels v soft as it is my own stubborn fats that refuse to go away.

I am also extremely happy with my eye bags removal as I have always wanted it since 16 yo. I don’t have to meitu/ photoshop any of my photos or selfies anymore! How awesome is that! Haha!
And I look 5 years younger too!
No scaring visible as the fats was removed from inside the lower lid. Paid about $4.5k all in. Recovery was the usual swelling with slight redness of skin and slightly sore feeling. Majority of the swelling goes away after 2 weeks. I was so nervous when I was in surgery as you have to be awake under mild sedation. I have low tolerance for pain and I’m scared easily. I kept whining ouch loudly when it was not that painful actually thinking back. It was all in my own head. But Dr Tan is always so calming and super patient. He said “it’s ok my wife also say ouch a lot when I do Botox for her”.
I wasn’t so nervous anymore when he chatted with me and played songs on Spotify during surgery.

A shout out to the nurses at SW1 too, esp Phyllis! They are all super nice and pretty too! They are so dedicated, you can ask them stupid questions and they will patiently explain the details to you. They are all extremely sincere. Best of all is they have a watsapp number for all their patients so they are literally there for you almost 24/7 where you can text any qn and voice any concerns.

I can go on and on about how fantastic Dr Tan and his nurses are. I might be doing more procedures maybe next year after I’ve saved up enough. After all, the only limits that exist are the ones in our minds.. in SW1 words : D

I'm in my early 40s, with 2 kids. Breasts deflated even more after having my 2nd.

Made appointments with a few clinics but went to SW1 1st. Straight after the consultation with Dr Tan, I feel so comfortable with that I cancelled all the other appointments. The clinic's interior is chic and private.

Dr Tan's professional, straight to the point and understands what i have in mind. The nurses were very helpful and also very assuring.

The 3D imaging really helped me (and my husband) visualize what will I look like after the surgery. The entire journey from the moment I booked, to today have been nothing but positive. If anyone is looking for their next makeover, i will strongly recommend Dr Tan

… have anyone done double eyelid surgery or rhinoplasty with Dr Tan Ying Chien from Sloane Clinic or Dr Wong Saw Yeen from Gleneagles? I've called to check, pricing are very similar, am just not sure if they are good, anyone?

Have put Woffles and Martin out of the picture as they are a tad too ex for me... Woffles quoted me $15,900 for Gore-Tex implant with ear cartilage grafts and $4,600 for double eyelid surgery. Martin charges between $8,000 - $10,000 for rhinoplasty under local anaesthesia and $2,000 - $5,000 for double eyelid surgery. I'm really not ready to pay such amounts! …
